1. What is the
main challenge being addressed in the book? The main challenge that the
book brings out is how language affects learning.
2. What does the
author mean by the phrase "ways with words"? Way with words
is a statement made to someone who has a higher vocabulary and knows how to
construct highly intelligent statements.
3. What is the
core argument being made by the author of this book The author says,
“But, then, the core argument of this book will be that people learn new ways
with words, in or out of school, only when they find the worlds to which these
words apply compelling.” I believe that that the students will expand their
vocab and the uses of the new words but only will do so if they find it
compelling. That is a challenge to teachers to find ways for students to
connect to these words.
4. Give an example
of a specialized variety of a language or "way with words" you have
learned outside of school? An example would be learning words that have
to do with a sport. During a practice or a game, words that have to do with
your activity will be used and this will expand your knowledge of words.
5. According to
the author, how do people learn a specialized variety of a language or
"way with words" best? People learn the best when they can
tie the language with an activity they are involved with.
6. If people are
to be successful in the 21st century, what must they become? They must
develop a complex understanding of language to succeed in today’s world.
7. The author
states that learning academic language
is NOT sufficient for success in modern society? Do you agree? Why or Why not?
I think that it is important, it is the next thing people recognize after your
appearance. People in job interviews will take that into consideration.
8. What do you
think about this author's "way with words"? It was hard for
me to take it all in at first. I had to re-read a few statements at first. You
can tell he is highly intelligent.
